PAT & Electrical Testing

PAT & Electrical Testing: Nottingham

At Ashlar Electrical we can undertake full electrical testing from the main supply point & portable appliance testing through to wiring accessories such as sockets and light fittings, including all the electrical points inbetween. It is essential to have a periodic inspection to test the system against the nationaly safety standard for an electrical installation. This should be carried out every 5 years or less in commercial & industrial premises.

There are a few reasons for a periodic inspection and test:

  • To meet licensing requirements
  • To comply with insurance terms and conditions
  • To comply with Electricity at Work Regulations
  • If you are letting a property
  • if you are purchasing a property

No electrical installation, no matter how carefully designed and erected, can be expected to last forever. Deterioration will take place due to age as well as due to normal wear and tear. With this in mind, the Regulations require regular inspection and testing to take place so that the installation can be maintained in a good and a safe condition.

All Wiring should be tested and inspected by a National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) or Electrical Contractors Association (ECA) approved Contractor, at intervals not exceeding 5 years, or such other periods as recommended.

Following each scheduled test and inspection, remedial work should be carried out as Necessary and an appropriate certificate issued.

What Does It Involve?

Testing Electrics

A fixed electrical installation includes all parts of a distribution system from the main incoming supply point, through to wiring accessories such as sockets and light fittings - and everything in-between.

Because the majority of the installation is unseen, it is often forgotten in terms of test and inspection.

  • The first thing we check the adequacy of earthing and bonding
  • Suitability of the switchgear and control gear e.g. consumer unit
  • Presence of adequate identification and notices
  • Extent of any wear and tear, damage or other deterioration
  • Serviceability of equipment e.g. switches, socket-outlets and light fittings
  • Changes in use of the premises which have led to, or might lead to, deficiencies in the installation
  • type of wiring system and its condition
  • Provision of residual current devices for socket-outlets that may be used to plug in electrical equipment used outdoors

The fact is that it is vitally important that all wires, cables, accessories and switching equipment are maintained well in order to ensure safety.

The two main dangers associated with electricity are risk of shock and risk of fire. Over time, installations deteriorate, and it is in the best interest of not only yourself and employees, but your insurance company that you have an installation that is not only electrically sound but free from risk of fire.

Our commercial & industrial electricians will provide a periodic inspection report (PIR) as part of the periodic inspection.
